COVID-19 Emergency Grant for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
The Society for Cognitive Science e.V. (GK e.V.) would like to support students who have found themselves in financial distress due to the COVID-19 pandemic with a temporary scholarship.
The grant provides funding of up to 500 € per month for a maximum of three months. The GK has the capacity to award six to eight grants.
The grant is intended to help alleviate financial difficulties and thereby enable students to complete their degree (bachelor’s or master’s) or to support a critical phase of their dissertation (e.g., completion of a paper).
The selection committee consists of the Executive Board of the Society for Cognitive Science e.V.
The committee is open to all types of emergency situations, provided they are caused by the pandemic in the context of the student’s degree program or doctoral studies and can be credibly documented.
Target group: The funding is intended for undergraduate and doctoral students enrolled at a university in Germany. More specifically: Only bachelor’s and master’s students in a cognitive science-related field (e.g., cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, computer science, AI, linguistics, neuroscience) who are ideally close to completing their degree, as well as doctoral candidates in such a field working on a cognitive science project, are eligible for funding. Individuals who have already received a bridging grant from the GK are not eligible for further funding.
Case Examples: (1) A student pursuing a master’s degree has fallen behind on writing her master’s thesis because, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, consistent childcare remains unavailable and she must provide childcare herself. The funding may be used for privately arranged childcare. (2) A doctoral student who is unable to complete her dissertation because important data could not be collected due to limited laboratory capacity. The funding may be used as a grant to cover living expenses after the end of her contract.
Application and Supporting Documentation
The following must be submitted:
- A clear description of the situation (documented cases are preferred), as well as details on how the funding will be used.
- Bachelor’s and Master’s students: please include your certificate of enrollment and transcript of records. A letter from your university’s academic advisor certifying that your studies are proceeding as expected and that you are realistically on track to graduate (by the end of the summer semester 2022).
- Doctoral students: a brief statement from your primary advisor outlining your cognitive science project and the current status of your work.
