Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the GK are set forth in its bylaws, which to date have defined the following activities:

  • Organizing the annual symposium and supporting the associated publications
  • Collaboration in the organization of other cognitive science training programs and conferences in Europe, in particular the Interdisziplinary College in Günne (IK Günne)
  • the compilation and publication of surveys on professional practice, education, and research in cognitive science, in some cases through specially established committees
  • the preparation of statements and expert opinions on issues related to cognitive science research and education

  • the preparation and dissemination of up-to-date information on developments in cognitive science research, which is communicated to GK members via a regular newsletter and announcements on the Society’s website
  • collaboration with related academic associations (to date, primarily the German Informatics Society, the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Psychologie and the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft), e.g., with regard to the joint organization of events at their respective conferences, as well as the coordination of nominations for DFG division representatives
  • the establishment of awards to recognize outstanding interdisciplinary research in cognitive science; currently, these include the GK Publication Award and the Brain Products Best Poster Award, both of which are presented at the Society’s annual symposium
  • preparing for the integration of ethical and societal considerations into the formation of public opinion regarding cognitive science technologies
  • To promote networking among doctoral students in the field of cognitive science in Germany by regularly providing financial support for the organization of a “Doctoral Symposium on Cognitive Science” with a thematic focus of the students’ choosing
  • Individual support for early-career researchers in cognitive science during particularly challenging times through tailored short-term fellowships (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic)
