CRITICAL REFLECTION ON SIMULATION SCIENCE FROM A HUMAN-CENTERED PERSPECTIVE

The DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence “Data-Integrated Simulation Science” (EXC 2075) is an interdisciplinary research center with more than 200 scientists performing research towards a common goal: We target a new class of modeling and computational methods based on available data from various sources, in order to take the usability, precision, and reliability of simulations to a new level.

THE PROJECT

The scope of this project extends the technical focus of EXC 2075 to critically reflecting on broader impacts of simulation science from a human-centered perspective, as taken on in disciplines like psychology, sociology, or philosophy of science. We envision innovative methodological contributions related to research areas such as human agency, autonomy, or trust in technology.

The successful candidate will work closely with the members of the SimTech Committee “Platform for Reflection”, offering a forum for reflecting on more general implications of the research conducted within the EXC 2075. Their research will also be connected to the Stuttgart Research Focus “Interchange Forum for Reflecting on Intelligent Systems” (SRF IRIS) (https://www.iris.uni-stuttgart.de/), which they can join as a member upon interest.

YOUR TASKS

You will be responsible for making methodological contributions for critically reflecting on individual and/or societal impacts of simulation science arising both within and beyond EXC 2075.  While the postdoctoral project proposed will be rooted in your home discipline, it should demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary scope and address key issues arising from research conducted within EXC 2075.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We welcome candidates with a doctorate in psychology, sociology, philosophy of science, or similar related fields. The ideal candidate can further demonstrate a solid interest and expertise in interdisciplinary approaches, proven by an interdisciplinary background and/or interdisciplinary directions sketched out in the research proposal.

WE OFFER

If you work with us,

  • you will enter a dynamic and friendly team of motivated and supportive colleagues
  • you will perform ambitious research in an inspirational and supportive scientific environment at the EXC 2075
  • you will be part of the largest research alliance at the university and join Cyber Valley, a vibrant ecosystem in interdisciplinary AI and robotics-related research
