This anthology is inspired by the hybrid workshop ‘Human and Smart
Machines as Partners in Thought?’ organized by Anna Strasser & Eric
Schwitzgebel in May 2023 at UC Riverside. Invited and confirmed authors
are Daniel Dennett, Eric Schwitzgebel, Henry Shevlin, Joshua Rust, Keith
Frankish, Michael Wilby, Ophelia Deroy, Paula Droege, and Sven Nyholm.

Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or other AI systems have been
the subject of widespread discussion. This book project aims to deliver
a comprehensive collection of philosophical analyses of our interactions
with AI systems, their capacities, and their impact on our society.

To address these issues, the following questions might serve as an

The ***24th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimisation (EvoCOP) *** is a multidisciplinary conference that brings together researchers working on applications and theory of evolutionary computation methods and other metaheuristics for solving difficult combinatorial optimisation problems appearing in various industrial, economic, and scientific domains.

Successfully solved problems include, but are not limited to, multi-objective, uncertain, dynamic and stochastic problems in the context of scheduling, timetabling, network design, transportation and distribution, vehicle routing, stringology, graphs, satisfiability, energy optimisation, cutting, packing, planning and search-based software engineering.

The EvoCOP 2024 conference will be held together with EuroGP (the 27th European Conference on Genetic Programming), EvoMUSART (the 13th European conference on evolutionary and biologically inspired music, sound, art and design) and EvoApplications (the 27th European Conference on the Applications of Evolutionary Computation), in a joint event collectively known as EvoStar (Evo*).

EvoMUSART is a multidisciplinary conference that brings together
researchers who are working on the application of Artificial Neural

such as Visual Art, Music, Architecture, Video, Digital Games, Poetry, or
Design. This conference gives researchers in the field the opportunity to

Submissions must be at most 16 pages long, in Springer LNCS format. Each
submission must be anonymized for a double-blind review process.

Accepted papers will be presented orally or as posters at the event and

The 4th installment of the lecture series “Explainable AI and Society” will take place during the winter semester 2023/2024, online and in person at TU Dortmund.
Modern AI can be used to drive cars, to decide on loans, or to detect cancer. Yet, the inner workings of many AI systems remain hidden – even to experts. Given the crucial role that AI systems play in modern society, this seems unacceptable. But how can we make complex, self-learning systems explainable? What kinds of explanations are we looking for when demanding that AI must be explainable? And which societal, ethical and legal desiderata can actually be satisfied via explainability?
The interdisciplinary, hybrid lecture series presents the latest research on these and related topics and invites exchange with researchers, students, and the interested public.

This year’s ECR Workshop focuses on the role of the brain in learning.
By bringing together (early career) researchers from different
disciplines with similar research interests, we want to facilitate a
fruitful exchange on this topic. The aim of this workshop is to
elucidate how the process of learning differs – or is the same – in
systems that possess brains and those that don’t.

Recent advances in the fields of artificial intelligence, animal and
even plant behavior have shown that being able to learn is not a
property unique to brains. Therefore, an important task for young
researchers in cognitive science will be to develop and apply a concept
of learning that captures learning processes in both artificial and
natural systems. While learning may be considered as multiply
realizable, it is also evident that the brain realizes learning in a
different way than artificial or simple biological systems do. In this
year’s ECR Workshop, we would like to discuss recent approaches to
answering questions such as:

How do brained and non-brained systems differ in realizing learning?
What organismal and environmental conditions suffice for learning?
Are there different kinds of learning, and if so, are some of them
unique to brains?
How should new insights into the mechanisms of learning in
non-brained systems change the way we think about learning in the brain?
Which spatiotemporal scales does learning occur on? Is it a process
confined to the brain, or does it include states and processes of the
organism and the environment as well?

While understanding has recently become the object of intense debate among
philosophers, it remains an open question how to make sense of different
forms of understanding. These include scientific understanding (e.g.
understanding scientific theories, phenomena, models, etc.), moral
understanding (e.g. understanding other people, understanding political
subjects, etc.), aesthetic understanding (e.g. understanding an artwork,
like a novel or painting, and how these enable us to understand the world),
or religious understanding (e.g. understanding theology, understanding and

Track Theme

As AI systems continue to permeate various sectors and aspects of our lives, ensuring their trustworthy and responsible design and use becomes critical. This conference track aims to bring together interdisciplinary research from philosophy, law, psychology, economics, and other relevant fields to explore the normative perspectives on and societal implications of developing and employing AI systems. It will examine the challenges of setting domain-dependent minimal requirements for verification, explanation, and assessment of ML systems with the aim of ensuring trustworthy and responsible use of real-world applications.

This year our summer school “Neural Dynamics for Embodied Cognition” will take place from the 21st to the 26th of August, 2023 at the Institute for Neural Computation, Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Gregor Schöner.


Neuronal dynamics provide a powerful theoretical language for the design and modeling of embodied and situated cognitive systems. This school provides a hands-on and practical introduction to neuronal dynamics ideas and enables participants to become productive within this framework. The school is aimed at advanced undergraduate or graduate students, postdocs and faculty members in embodied cognition, cognitive science, and robotics.


Topics addressed include neural dynamics, attractor dynamics and instabilities, dynamic field theory, neuronal representations, artificial perception, simple forms of cognition including detection and selection decisions, memory formation, learning, and grounding relational concepts.


The school combines tutorial lectures with hands-on project work.

Participants will develop their own modeling project, which may connect to their ongoing doctoral or postdoctoral research.
