Thüring <<...>> ### Doctoral Research Assistant Position in Freiburg: Wayfinding Cognition & Architectural Design ### Transregional Collaborative Research Center "Spatial Cognition – Reasoning, Action, Interaction" (SFB/TR 8) Universität Freiburg In the project "Wayfinding Cognition & Architectural Design" (Code WayCAD-1) the following position is available (pending final approval): Postgraduate Student / Research Assistant (BAT IIa/2) Cognitive Psychology The aim of the project is to investigate how human wayfinding behavior corresponds with architectural design in built environments. How can human wayfinding strategies and navigational preferences be characterized? Which are the characteristics of the built environment that facilitate or hinder easy orientation and efficient wayfinding? How can the design efforts of architects be understood and linked to human wayfinding cognition? The project addresses these issues with the help of experimental investigations both in real-life building settings and in Virtual Reality environments, while architectural design knowledge is captured with knowledge engineering techniques. We invite candidates who are actively engaged in human research in cognitive psychology and whose work is applicable to spatial cognition issues. Candidates can have a degree in psychology or a related field with broad eligibility to spatial cognition research. The salary corresponds to BAT IIa/2. The candidate is expected to pursue a doctoral degree along with the project work. The appointee should be experienced in the following areas: • Design, development, analyses, and interpretation of psychological experiments • Statistical analysis and experimental methods • Familiarity with basic concepts of cognitive psychology • An interest in or prior experience with topics such as navigation, spatial cognition or architecture is very welcome.
